Mary and Max

In mary and max pathos and comedy fit hand in hand. The audience observes a relationship that blossoms over a long period of time. We see the downfalls and the up beat moments. Giving the audience this insight lets us feel closer to both characters while still being able to laugh at moments. I think a moment that shows this technique a lot would be when Max goes to over eaters anonymous.  He is going because he cannot stop eating and a women keeps trying to kiss him. He doesn’t understand why and he doesn’t know how to react but it’s funny when he steps out of the elevator with lip stick prints all over his face. It’s a moment where the audience feels bad that he doesn’t understand but it’s funny because she is taking advantage and making him look humorous. Mary and Max was very well done and this film is very beautiful in its own sense.

  1. Tess,
I love the scene that you mentioned with the eaters anonymous group woman that has a crush on Max. All throughout the movie, the viewer feels bad that Max has this severe anxiety towards his meetings because of this woman and yet the viewer doesn't feel as sad about this because it almost puts a smile on the viewers face when he imagines her big lips coming at him.
