Kane’s life was absolutely
distorted after his parents gave him away to Mr. Thatcher. He got everything he
wanted and Thatcher wanted him to be the best and at the top of the list, and
money was very important. Thompson’s interview with people all told stories
that showed who Kane was from his greatest faults and strengths: his rough
& lonely childhood, his path to being famous and the greatest owner of the
New York Inquirer, a first marriage with a woman who’s uncle was the President
of the United States, probably one of the known richest, successful man alive,
and then all his failures. He was also on the run for US Governor which he wasn’t
very successful. He had an affair with Susan Alexander who was much younger
than him and an opera singer. Before Kane died, his last words were “Rose Bud”.
Kane,
as we saw in the movie, is a very ambitious, driven man who will do anything he
can to get what he want. Is he happy? Absolutely not! Even with all the wealth
he possessed, Kane’s major downfall was the fact that he kept all the anger
towards his parents to himself. He held a grudge against his parents that
overruled his entire life. He had two failed marriages because his life was
devoted to himself. All through his life, “Rose Bud” was the one thing that he
held on so dearly. His sled was the only thing and friend he had who made him
happy even when he was a child. The film portrayed Kane as someone who is
wealthy and known but never truly got what he wanted out of his life. He could
be the greatest but he could also be a failure. He was liked and disliked by a
lot of people. He had major successes in the newspaper industry but major
failures in his relationships with others. He was never true to himself of what
he really wanted out of his life. He had goals but never cared enough. As viewers,
we are left with more questions as to who Kane really was and what was important
to him had his life been different if his parents didn’t give him away.
I agree with your last statement that we are left with more questions then answers. We see so much of his life but we never seem to fully understand him as a character. Charles Kane character is very round and is always changing. I also feel that you are correct when saying he never knew what he wanted out of life. He was always changing and developing as a character. Marrying multiple times, and living an exciting lifestyle. He is never satisfied with his career or personal life. Mr. Kane is a very deep character yet we only scratch the surface of his personality.
